China continues to advance and already accounts for 33.7% of total Brazilian agribusiness exports.

China was the final destination of 33.7% of all exports made by Brazilian agribusiness in 2020, generating revenues of US $ 33.988 billion. It was the second largest participation of a closed year in the entire historical series, behind only 2018 (35.0%). In 2019, China’s share of foreign sales in the sector was 32.0%. China’s role in agribusiness foreign trade exceeds the sum of the other 13 main markets for Brazilian agricultural products, the United States among them.

According to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture, sector exports last year totaled US $ 100.8 billion, 4.1% more than in 2019 and the second best mark in the historical series, behind only the numbers registered in 2018.

Among the top ten products exported by Brazilian agribusiness, China was the final destination of seven: soybeans, fresh beef, raw cane sugar, cellulose, fresh chicken, uncarded or combed cotton and pork in natura.

The data also indicate a strong increase in meat exports to China, with special emphasis on fresh beef. Total product sales reached a record $ 7.5 billion, of which 54.2%, or $ 4 billion, was generated by exports to the Chinese market.

A significant increase was also registered in sugar exports, with foreign sales totaling US $ 7.4 billion, with US $ 1.3 billion going to the Asian country.

The numbers related to Brazilian agribusiness exports to the country’s main partners reinforce the importance of China as, by far, the largest importer of Brazilian agricultural products. While exports to the Chinese totaled US $ 33.998 billion, shipments to the second main destination country, the United States, totaled US $ 6.961 billion. Much less expressive were sales to other important markets such as the Netherlands (US $ 4.074 billion), Japan (US $ 2.510 billion), South Korea (US $ 2.216 billion), Vietnam (US $ 2.179 billion), Spain (US $ 2.164 billion), Germany ($ 2.074 billion), Hong Kong ($ 2.026 billion), Turkey ($ 1.903 billion) and Thailand ($ 1.825 billion).

In the assessment of the Ministry of Agriculture, as of this year, corn is another product that may register a strong increase in shipments to China. According to the Mystery, the Brazilian and Chinese governments are concluding the update of the health certificate between the two countries and the end of the negotiations should result in a strong increase in sales of the cereal to China, which has been consistently expanding imports of the product.
